P-S: Casella Waste and Saratoga Biochar
A Post-Star story found that over 10 years Casella Waste systems has accrued at least $7.7 million in regulatory fines and legal settlements throughout New York, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. Casella is the company that has contracted with Saratoga Biochar solutions to truck waste water biosolids from around the state to the proposed fertilizer plant in the Moreau Industrial Park, the story says. As recently as last November, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, ordered a subsidiary of Casella to pay a $500,000 civil penalty to address air and water issues at an Ontario County facility. The DEC is currently considering the the Biochar project in Moreau. Casella has both these problems at their sites but has also been an early adopter of many environmentally-friendly initiatives, the story says.
