DG, TU: SpaCity approves restorative justice, closes meeting after sustained protest
Racism exists in Saratoga Springs especially in the areas of housing, employment and law enforcement. This, according to a Restorative Justice resolution passed by the city council 4-1 on Tuesday May 2, the Daily Gazette is reporting. Commissioner of Public Safety James Montagnino was the only “no” vote. The resolution also creates a panel to begin discussion on racism in the community, the story says.
After the vote, the members of the Black Lives Matter Saratoga group protested the legal actions taken against leaders Chandler Hickenbottom and Lexis Figuereo. The city’s police benevolent association has issued a statement saying that their officers are not racist and they do not apply the law based on race, the DG story says.
The Times Union story highlights the statement from Montagnino who said, “I suspect there are people in this room who know who toppled” a civil war statue in Congress Park two years ago. This drew taunts and chants and a rebuke from Figuereo who said the former administration also accused black people of crimes they did not commit.
